The Mint Opens Corey Pemberton's First Solo Museum Show
Living Well, opening September 19 at Mint Museum Uptown, brings together more than 70 works in painting, collage, glass, quilts and textile design by the Los Angeles artist.
Corey Pemberton: Living Well opened Saturday at Mint Museum Uptown in the Levine Center for the Arts, giving the Los Angeles-based artist his first solo museum presentation.
The exhibition gathers more than 70 pieces across painting, collage, glass, quilts and textile designs, many of them mixed media. At its heart are paintings of highly designed living spaces that reveal something about the figures who inhabit them. According to the museum, most of the people depicted are people of color and LGBTQ individuals, who are rarely seen in the setting of an art museum. Chief curator Jen Sudul Edwards describes that visibility as central to the show. A catalogue accompanies the exhibition.
An Artist With Carolina Ties
The museum says Pemberton completed a Core Fellowship at Penland School of Craft and began a residency at Charlotte's McColl Center in August. His work has been shown at the Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art and a contemporary art museum in Raleigh, and is in the collections of the Museum of Art and Design, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Chrysler Museum of Art. He also works with Crafting the Future, a nonprofit that supports artists of color. In the museum's account, Pemberton says the queer experience is diverse and varied, and does not look just one way.

The exhibition runs through January 31, 2027. Adult admission is $15; members, visitors 18 and under and college art students are free, and college students with ID, seniors 65 and over and teachers pay $10.
